Have a look at what we’ve been learning…
Fitness
Robert Proud visited the school today to take the children for fitness sessions. Our Year 3 class took part in some hula hooping activities and a tug of war!
Volcanoes
Year 3 have been working on the topic Volcanoes in Geography this half term
They have learned about the different layers of the Earth, from the inner core to the Earth’s crust.
Over the time, the children also learned how a volcano erupts and the effects of eruptions around the world. As part of the enrichment of the subject, the children had the opportunity to create their own miniature scaled volcano and watched it erupt with a chemical reactions of bicarbonate of soda and citric acid solution. They were in awe at the effect and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Light and Shadows
Year 3 have been working on the topic Light this half term.
They have been investigating different light sources, how we see objects with light, reflections and how shadows are made.
In this lesson, the children have explored how and why shadows change length and size and if there is a pattern to the changes.
Red Nose Day 2022
We all had a fabulous time on Comic Relief this year dressed as our superheroes. We thoroughly enjoyed all the games that the School Council ran in the hall in the afternoon too!
Nim 7
Year 3 were problem solving in Maths. They played a game called Nim 7, where they had to make sure they were not the last one to take a counter. They also had to figure out if there was a strategy to being able to win each time. It was a really clever game. Try it for your self.
World Book Day
It has been lovely to celebrate World Book Day this year. A huge thank you to all those costumes that have been made and the effort that the parents and children have gone to to create their outfits!
The Structure of the Earth
In Geography, we have begun to learn about our Earth and the different layers. The children used different coloured plasticine to recreate the layers and show them. They were really in awe when their Earth’s were cut in half and they saw the different layers.
Egyptian Death Masks
As part of our work on Egyptians, the children designed and made their own style of Death Masks. The children used card, tubes and paints, as well as strips of paper to create the desired effect. Here are some examples as well as a whole class picture.
3D Shapes
In Year 3 this week we have been learning 2D and 3D shapes. The children have learned about the properties and were recognising the faces as 2D shapes. They then used the nets of 3D shapes to create them, exploring from paper cut outs to creating 3D shapes using polydrons and skeleton frames.
Angles and Direction
In Year 3 this week we have been learning about, angles and directions, as well as the terms clockwise and anti-clockwise.
The children put that knowledge into practise by programming the Bee Bots to travel a certain route and recording the journey using the correct vocabulary.
Skeletons
For Science this week, Year 3 have been learning about the skeleton and the naming of bones. They then created their own skeleton, as a team.
The following Science session was called ‘Mighty Muscles’ in which the children learned about some of the muscles we have in our body and how they work.
They then added the muscles that protect them to their original skeletons and almost created a whole body.
Christmas Party
Year 3 and 4 has their Christmas party this week. The children enjoyed a variety of games. Particularly pass the parcel with dares where the children had to floss, bark like dogs, hum the Strictly come Dancing theme tune and even dance off against Mrs Meek!
Autumn Walk
Year 3 and 4 went on their Autumn Walk on Tuesday. They travelled up through Demesne Mill towards Jack Walker bridge. Here they manged to accidentally herd some sheep. Next, they paid a visit to the stepping stones before ending the walk at Holyrood Lane for some conker picking.
Weardale Adventure Centre
Year 3 had a wonderful day at Weardale Adventure Centre. They learned how to work together as a team, listen and follow instructions and also step out of their comfort zone and try something new. They tested their resilience and perseverance and overcame some challenging moments throughout the day. The most important thing was they had lots of fun and had a thoroughly enjoyable day of adventure.
