Hedgehog Heroes

1st July 2022 By lauracoote

How to look after hedgehogs

Year 2 have been doing a lot of research on how to look after hedgehogs. They have created posters which are displayed in school to tell people how to care for them in the wild. Please take some time to look at Olivia’s poster which has some top tips on!

OM poster

As part of the Hedgehog Hero project that we are involved in, the children have also had to write a letter to parents and carers to inform them on how to look after hedgehogs. We hope you enjoy reading one of our letters and get some useful advice from it.

Hedgehog Heroes

1st July 2022 By lauracoote

As part of our strive to become hedgehog heroes, Year 2 approached the workers who come into school to cut our grass to ask them if we could put some of our special stickers onto their machinery. The stickers from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society are bright yellow and remind people to check the area for hedgehogs before using the equipment.

We have also been learning how to look after hedgehogs in our gardens. It is important that they keep hydrated and so we have placed little water dishes around the edges of our wildlife garden. Next week we are going to design and make a hedgehog feeding station!

Please don’t think our wildlife garden is messy. There are two sections of it that we are keeping overgrown in order to attract all the different types of creatures. So far we have seen bees, moths, beetles, slugs, rabbit and many more living things enjoying the area.

Kingswood Visit

1st July 2022 By lauracoote

Children from Year 5 and 6 had an action-packed weekend at Kingswood in Conisbrough. They completed activities including nightline, orienteering, archery, abseiling and raft building. Here is what some of our pupils thought about the weekend:

“I really enjoyed Kingswood. My favourite activity was the vertical play pen, you had to use team work and have trust in the people who were holding you. I also learned that you can achieve anything with teamwork.” Molly (Y6)

“I enjoyed my stay at Kingswood and I found out that team work is amazing and it takes you far in life. Some of the activities were easier than others but I found I enjoyed the difficult ones the most of all!” Emily A. (Y6)

Pride

27th June 2022 By lauracoote

Wolsingham Primary have had a lovely week celebrating Pride.  All classes have produced some fantastic work which will soon be up in our entrance corridor about what makes us proud to be who we are.  In class, children have done poems, created artwork and made flags.  The week ended with our own parade around the school grounds where the children were invited to play instruments as loud as they could to make noise for equality and a lovely whole school photo was taken in our rainbow colours! More photos will be uploaded soon!

Durham Miners’ Gala Banner

27th June 2022 By lauracoote

On Friday evening, our five winners of the NEU Miners’ Gala Banner competition went along to Durham Town Hall to unveil the finished banner.  Their work was chosen from over 400 entries and was used alongside other children’s work to inspire the banner which will be carried by NEU representatives every year at the Durham Miners’ Gala.  It was so lovely to see so many of our school as winners at the event! Well done!

Commonwealth Friendship Games

24th June 2022 By lauracoote

As part of the Commonwealth Friendship Games, Dean Bank came to visit us at the end of the week. The chosen children from Year 3-6 took part in a number of sports played in countries within the commonwealth; cricket (Trinidad and Tobago), tchoukball (India), ‘ice’ hockey (Canada) and frisbee golf to represent the Australian boomerang. A big thank you to our Year 6s for helping at the different stations and for working with the different children.

Thank you, Dean Bank Primary School!

24th June 2022 By lauracoote

As part of the Commonwealth Games, County Durham Sport and the School Games Organisers have teamed up to design the Friendship Games as a celebration of physical activity and our Commonwealth values which are HUMANITY, DESTINY and EQUALITY. We have been teamed up with Dean Bank Primary School in Ferryhill.

The Friendship Games is a county-wide event where schools are linked with another ‘Friendship School’ that has the shared aims to increase physical activity and participation among pupils in the targeted groups. On Wednesday, some pupils travelled to Dean Bank school to take part in various games such as; kick rounders, football, rock paper scissors and other mini games. Dean Bank were very welcoming and we look forward to their visit to our school later in the week!

Bishop Auckland Dash

16th June 2022 By lauracoote

On Thursday, some children from the school took part in The Bishop Auckland Dash. Four children were selected from each KS2 class (two boys and two girls), one boy and girl running in the 300m dash and the other competing in the chest push and standing long jump. All the children did really well on an extremely hot day. Xander from Year 3 won the gold medal for his chest push, Juliette from Year 4 won the silver medal for her chest push, Ryan won a silver and a bronze medal for his chest push and standing long jump and Morgan won the bronze medal in the Year 3 dash. A big well done to all who took part as each competition was out of about 60 pupils!

Platinum Jubilee

15th June 2022 By lauracoote

What a fabulous time we had at our school’s celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee.

We spent the week doing artwork, learning dances and learning the National Anthem ready for our garden party.  On Thursday, we had a lovely time in the sun, playing games typical of Britain, doing orienteering and having a wonderful ice cream to finish off!

Lots of photos were taken so we’ve put them altogether in a little slideshow below!
